Instead they are given the impression that slavery was invented by evil Europeans to bedevil poor, pitiful sub-Saharan Africans. What we should be doing is celebrating the great moral revolution that occurred in the West during the 18th and 19th centuries thanks to America and Britain. Imagine advocating the end of slavery for EVERYONE and not just for your own nation, family or people! The anti-slavery movement also had its origins in the Reformation and increased religion freedom - a freedom that allowed people to read the Bible for themselves and sometimes conclude (as the Quakers did) that Jesus was serious about treating others as you would wish to be treated yourself.
