I think that is a bit harsh. There is absolutely no reason to believe the attempted assassin/successful murderer had ever heard of John, much less that he watched that video. But at the very least, John will need to write a NY Times column explaining why he was wrong to call for somebody to try and kill the former president and yes apologize to Trump, the Comperatore family, and the other victims. Trump derangement syndrome is a real thing and I fear that it caused John to say something that could seriously injure his career.

Given our current cancel culture, it won't be long before some people start calling on the NY Times and Columbia University to fire John. John has said in the past that he didn't care about not having tenure, but he may feel differently now. His bosses at the Times and Columbia most likely understand why John said what he did and I am sure some were hoping it would happen. But Columbia administrators are already under a lot of fire over anti-Semitism and may not want to defend John. However, I think efforts to cancel John will be focused primarily on his Times column. I would be shocked if the Times doesn't at least suspend him. They may not allow John's apology to run in the Times.

I am a Republican that despises Donald Trump. I have thought quite a bit about whether I should hope Trump was assassinated. I ultimately decided that the reaction of the sizable minority of the U.S. population (majorities in certain parts of the U.S.) that revere Donald Trump would be worse than a second Trump administration. I also thought innocent bystanders were likely to be hurt in an attempt to kill him. The timing of this attempt could not have been better from Donald Trump's perspective. If that bullet hadn't come so close to killing him, I could believe his campaign was behind it. If Trump does the smart thing and gives a speech that brings Americans together rather than waving the bloody shirt calling for Republicans to "fight to save our country" I don't see a way for Biden to beat him. If Trump can come across as more reasonable than he has appeared in the past, allowing many moderates to wonder if almost being killed changed him for the better, Donald Trump will be our 47th president. Of course, he may still win if he waves the bloody shirt like a madman.

I hope John comes through the firestorm relatively unscathed.

All these words, and not one bit of sympathy for the family of the firefighter. God help us all.

I have tremendous sympathy for the Comperatore family and all of the victims of this shooting. I should have been clearer about that. That man died a hero, but that probably isn't very comforting for his family right now. Our public discourse has become so harsh that people think nothing of wishing violence against politicians, Justices, and other celebrities. Kyle Gass, Jack Black's Tenacious D partner, was presented with a birthday cake on Sunday and his wish was that next time they not miss Trump. That was a joke. John was serious. I don't want his career to be over, but he needs to publicly acknowledge how wrong he was. He needs to do that even if he doesn't believe it.

Totally agree. I do not want John’s career to end. I love his perspective. It’s absolutely interesting. Having said that, I put myself in the shoes of the Comperatore family and I can’t imagine the despair I would feel. People like John, who were promoting this action, need not only to apologize, but they also need to pay reparations to the injured party. Yes, I know, there is little doubt that Crooks was not a subscriber to Loury’s substack, and did not get his marching orders from John. But, there needs to be consequences for this behavior and it does not need to only be John who contributes. How about a gofundme to the Comperatore’s from all those public figures out there who promoted this action, including John?

And the other victims of this shooting….
