My friend John McWhorter is a calm, rational, reasonable guy. So I was truly shocked when he implied some weeks ago that he wished someone would assassinate Donald Trump. I thought maybe John just got carried away in the moment. But in this clip from our most recent conversation, you’ll see him apologize for making the statement without quite taking it back. When even a moderate centrist like John, who is usually so mindful of his language, feels license to talk like this about Trump, we must be in a very dark place as a nation.

John. How you feeling these days about your fever dream regarding Trump? Now a 55 year old firefighter is dead and kids have lost their father. An apology is insufficient, if you were even considering one. A proper response would be to hand over your wealth and pension to the Comperatore family, and live a life of poverty.
Glenn, I hope you will ask John to go into more detail about what he thinks would happen if the leader of a political movement with millions of devoted followers were assassinated on the way to reelection. Two weeks ago, he called for Trump's assassination, and it almost happened; does he feels personally at risk? Would he if it had succeeded?
It seems to me most of the TDS left don't really accept that millions of their fellow citizens believe strongly in Trump and his goals and feel just as negatively about the Clinton/Bush/Obama/Biden types as they do about Trump.
