Tribalism is indeed competitive, and to your point, every tribe, every religion, every group will erect protective barriers to secure any advantages, earned or inherited. Yet some minorities in America refuse to stay down—Indians (from India), Jews from the world over, and Asians are amongst the best educated and wealthiest in society. Each of these minorities has been put down, carved out, slammed for their noses, slanted eyes, and dark skin, and degraded for the way they speak. So how did they do it? WORK. They outworked their competitors. This is the American lesson.
