This problem is not unique to this particular debate and seems to characterize most the of discussion about "Critical Race Theory." AFAICT, the main disagreement was about whether students in public elementary schools are being taught that race is an essential part of one's identity and related ideas such as that black people are always victims and white people are always oppressors.
