On the Next TGS Live: John McWhorter on America at 250 + the Destruction of Black Wealth in Boston
Tomorrow, Friday, July 10 at 1:00 P.M. EDT
Last week, the TGS team, Rajiv Sethi, and I devoted the livestream to the nation’s 250th birthday. That’s a big number. Surely it warrants more than two hours of conversation. So I’m going to continue the festivities with a special bonus appearance from John McWhorter, who will be joining me again tomorrow, Friday, July 10 at 1:00 P.M. EDT to talk over the U.S.’s first two-and-a-half centuries. We’ll be talking about America’s past and present, while revisiting some recent topics of conversation, like the Karmelo Anthony sentence and its cultural aftermath.
In the second half of the show, TGS contributor Robert Patton-Spruill will join the stream to talk about real estate, redlining, and black wealth in his native Boston. The political commentator Sabby Sabs recently released a documentary about what she sees as the erasure of Black Boston, a once-thriving site of African American community that has since fallen to gentrification and racist policy. Rob sees things differently, to say the least. Over at his Substack, he’s in the midst of a three-part series that both critiques Sabby’s documentary and tells the story of how his fellow Black Bostonians turned on him and his plans to create wealth and a permanent home for his family while providing affordable housing. Here’s part one, and here’s part two.
