I'm quite familiar with the parallels between black culture and Appalachian culture. I grew up outside of Boston and experienced none on it. But I've lived my adult life in southern Ohio, and experience as part of my life. I'd say it's an improvement over my experience in MA.
You might want to check out "The American Nations" by Colin Woodard. He does a great job of breaking down the various cultures all trying to co-exist in America.
Thank you, I love the study of history and cultures. "Albion's Seed" by David Hackett Fischer is another good book on the cultural differences between coastal Southerners, Mountain and backwoods Southerners, Middle Atlantic and Northeast populations.
Oddly, I'm a Floridian living in NE Ohio, and my wife has relatives in the Boston area which we visit frequently. Small world.
