I just wanted to pop in with an exciting announcement. Starting today, you can receive my newsletter on your phone on a new mobile app. If you read my posts and watch my videos on your phone, I highly recommend doing so through the app. It offers a smooth and convenient way to read and view all of the content I post here. I particularly like the commenting feature, which allows you to read and comment on my posts all in one place without having to switch from your inbox to the website. And if you subscribe to other Substack newsletters, you can access those through the app as well.
Glenn, when can we expect your chat with Sam Harris to be released? I thought the discussions he has had with both yourself and with John have been truly brilliant.
I think it's unwise for these "free speech" platforms to fundraise so aggressively. They all end up following an overcooked growth/development trajectory that's de rigeur in Silicon Valley, because it's modeled on promise-big grow-fast get-IPO, but bad for building a long-term sustainable model. In the case of Substack, as with Clubhouse and Callin and a hundred others, it means releasing a hasty app that's iOS only, neglecting development of web reader, predatory billing practises, premature centralization at the expense of writers, risk to safe unharvested user data, and a the ever-tightening noose of cash-in compromise.
App should've been born iOS and Android. Web reader shouldn't be left to fall behind on festures. Billing shouldn't be grab-money first, provide support later (if at all). I've been overbilled three times on other Substacks. Never resolved.. There should be bug/account support tickets. In a way it's plundering the very real, very valuable trust built by guys like Glenn Loury, to feed his hard won audience into an automated subscription silo; with no human being at Substack we can contact if anything goes wrong. It's bad, if not borderline dishonest.
Meh. The app is not ideal if you’re eyesight is wonky--by now, most reader apps routinely have a feature to tinker with the font and general appearance.
Also, I tried listening to a podcast within the app today, got interrupted by repairman, and opened the app a few hours later to finish. The app had lost my place, while podcast apps remember where you left off. Basically this app is a jack of all trades
Beware of downloading the app. It screws up email notices of all kinds.
Ill keep an eye out for the Android version.

Also, what I wouldn't give for a dark mode!
