The Philadelphia word “Jawn” or as I had previously assumed “John”, I had heard a mainstream version as a child in the 1970’s- 1980’s referring to the customer of a female prostitute. Today, I use the term as I have for many years “John Doe” an anonymized name. Is this a type of bi-directional language spill-over?

The Blues Opera set in 1889, that is the Victorian era right? Strict and formal societal norms and expectations, marriage etiquette - probably something about birth order and roles. Is there a GoFundMe? I want to see it. I should attend in Victorian attire ( but comfy shoes).

Thanks Glenn and John (alphabetical). The in-person video where both are present- wonderful. And John at The NY Times can only be great news and reason for us to be more hopeful during such a divisive era.

I enjoy McWhorter's columns and the more power to his pen. If reading comments or reviews messes with the process, then don't do it. As for the remarks from the historian, part of the trouble with writing history is trying to find a grand over all design when sometimes there are number of competing factors and motivations and it is part of the skill of the historian to make a cogent picture/compelling argument when some of the jigsaw pieces are missing and there are always jigsaw pieces missing. Sometimes, new information or fresh eyes ask hard questions and people are forced to look at history in a different way which may or may not be anymore accurate. It is the whole thing about the known knowns, and the knowns unknowns but the real thing tripping you up is the unknown unknowns which suddenly become known.

Good point on being too busy to worry about other opinions and just moving on. I'm more of the Willie Sutton school of monetary incentives and look at many of the arguments like systemic racism, CRT etc. as the way to control the politics and thus the budget. But this is clearly not an absolute and I appreciate what different perspectives bring to the discussion. When I work through the issues I always end up thinking the best answer is to try and provide a productive solution going forward, which for me usually includes vouchers and term limited government employment to provide a facsimile of family structure K-16 or so. I would enjoy seeing what John and Glenn would propose as a solution on the issues before they move on to the next subject.

I subscribed to John when he wrote here at Substack, but, man, the New York Times? They just retracted an article because... Well, here's the retraction...

"The article also misstated the number of Covid hospitalizations in U.S. children. It is more than 63,000 from August 2020 to October 2021, not 900,000 since the beginning of the pandemic. In addition, the article misstated the timing of an F.D.A. meeting on authorization of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children. It is later this month, not next week."

What's 837,000 between friends? John's gonna lose his credibility working for that outfit. I hope he's still writing as fearlessly as he did here. I support his taking the gig, though. For one thing, it should give his upcoming book a lot of visibility. (Out two weeks from today!)
