Delano Squires – Black, Christian, and Conservative

Black conservatives may not occupy the mainstream of American political discourse, but I assure you, we exist. And we come in more than one variety! This week I’m talking with Delano Squires, a writer at Blaze Media and an avowed Black Christian conservative. Delano’s perspective on politics and public morality is one rarely heard in the mainstream media, and while I don’t agree with him about everything, he’s a serious man whose views deserve a broader audience.

Delano begins by tracing his conservatism back to his family and the church. I ask him to comment on the outlier status of black conservatives, and he offers his critique of what he terms “the Five Ps of the Afristocracy”: politicians, pundits, professors, performers, and preachers. Delano goes on to explain that his politics proceed from his Christian faith and his reading of the Bible. His staunch opposition to abortion also proceeds from his faith, and he sees the high number of abortions obtained by black women as a crisis—these black lives matter to him, too. Relatedly, he sees family structure as the key to rectifying many of the problems we see in troubled black communities today. We end on the question of whether promoting “traditional” values and the centrality of the nuclear family will be enough to repair whatever in our society has been broken.

Delano is quite clear about his beliefs, and I imagine a lot of you will have something to say about it. I’m looking forward to reading your comments!
