Anita Hill was not, is not, a blemish. Nor did she bring folly to his confirmation. She brought courage, fortitude & integrity to a process that intends to, and partially did, expose some blemishes and follies which Clarence Thomas had brought upon himself. Anita Hill bringing forth pertinent evidence pertaining to his character did not absolve the committee of their responsibility to examine other aspects of his philosophy.

A couple of years ago I decided that I ought to read biographies of all the Supreme Court justices that had biographies written about them. When I told some friends I was reading a biography of Clarence Thomas, my super ultra progressive liberal friends flipped their lids. I was shocked by their reactions. I think if you don’t like someone’s ideas you should seek to understand them. Reading a biography is not an endorsement of ideas, just a seeking of understanding. His life is truly very interesting and he is truly important even if his opinions are not popular. I think Glenn’s passionate outrage is well justified.
