John McWhorter & Shane Hachey – Crime and Disorder in Minneapolis

John and I are now months into what has turned out to be an ongoing series of episodes and debates about Derek Chauvin, George Floyd, and Minneapolis, and things show no signs of slowing down. I had a sense that our initial conversation about The Fall of Minneapolis would turn some heads. And even though Radley Balko’s writing on the documentary has led me to reconsider some of the statements I made in that episode, I still think The Fall of Minneapolis’s examination of the aftermath of the civil disorder of the summer of 2020 merits attention. According to Shane Hachey, our guest on this week’s episode, that disorder is still a problem, even though the media spotlight has shifted away from it.

As you may know, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has corresponded with John and me. John detects a hint of disdain in Ellison’s attitude toward us, though he promises to behave if Ellison comes on the show. The blogger, YouTuber, and Minneapolis local Shane Hachey joins us to talk about the city’s post-George Floyd strife. In his account, radicals are running the show. As Shane tells it, the decreased police presence in the city has led to more crime and more disorder. He hopes that sensible liberals tired of the strife will vote across party lines and elect conservative local leaders. After Shane takes his leave, we spend a few minutes on John’s forthcoming projects and the Fani Willis imbroglio in Georgia.
