John, I really don’t understand your view of Trump in any sort of current context.

Does Trump lie horribly? Yes, he certainly does.

Is it somehow unique in our moment? No, not at all.

I think that is where people see some of your “Trump Derangement”. It’s not people thinking Trump doesn’t lie and disagreeing with you. It’s “why is this even a line of delineation?”

Something I’ve noticed in the prior 8 years with Trump is my shifting on this point and beginning to understand. I don’t like Trump at all (after Saturday/transparently sham trial against him/debate, I can now see myself voting for him), I’ve said that a million times in a million places. However, Trump says completely outrageous things that are blatant lies, fair enough. Biden also lies with every word that comes out of his mouth, and seemingly no one in your position (John) treats them as the same. But, everyone else seemingly does treat them the same. And I am starting to as well.

Trump says “they’re sending us the mental patients to cross the boarder”. Ok, I don’t know who “they” could possibly be who is literally sending mental patients, who clearly do not constitute a significant fraction of immigrants are. Clearly a lie.

Biden says “You have to understand on Israel that they have the most right wing government in their history and……” placing responsibility on the Israeli government for October 7th and the response.

That is a lie. Everyone sees that as a lie. Joe Biden knows it’s a lie. The media knows it’s a lie.

Yet, no one calls it a lie. They say he could have been more diplomatic with his words. Or, he has a differing view of the situation. Or, it’s a matter of degree, it’s not outright false.

No, it’s just lying. Even pointing to the Israeli government at all and trying to tie them to October 7th or the lack of peace afterwards is a lie. Everyone outside of no nothing idiots knows it’s a lie. Biden doesn’t believe there isn’t peace because Israel. He wants to please people in his base so they can go “see he’s holding them to account”. No one gives a shit about the minutiae between the extent of the lies. They just go “oh, they’re both lying, I don’t care that Trump lies”.

Further, he lies by telling the truth. Remember the month where we were told Biden wasn’t halting weapon shipments? Remember when everyone who said Biden was halting shipments was called an idiot and a liar? Well during the debate he straight up said he was halting weapon shipments of 2,000lbs bombs. Something he’d said previously then tried to backtrack and obfuscate. Well, he said it openly during the debate again. Lie.

Then, his entire existence on that stage was a lie. “Trump lies a lot!! Oh no!!” The Biden Administration has been lying for 4 straight years on the health and condition of the president. He himself has lied for 4 straight years. They even created a new made up terms for a new class of misinformation “cheap fakes” to support that lie. It is not inaccurate to say they have lied every single day of his administration on this point. Said don’t believe your lying eyes. He gets on stage and completely blows up this series of egregious lies. The thousands of times they’ve lied gets revealed. And your still stuck on “Trump lied too much”?

I’m not saying in an ideal world they wouldn’t be honest candidates. Of course I’d prefer that. Also I’m not saying Trump doesn’t lie constantly. He clearly does.

What I’m wondering is why do you care? How could that possibly be a pro- for one candidate over the other at some point.

P.S. another form of lie is “ideology”. Specifically, minority power imbalances, the historical consequences of oppression, racism in America, etc. Every time for 4 years that’s brought up it is just seen as a different view of the country. It’s not a different view, it’s a lie. When you stay stuff like police are targeting black and brown people in America, and you don’t have evidence that moves the needle 0.1% in proving that statement. Youre just lying. Trump has as much evidence saying illegal immigrants are criminals (as some illegals have committed crimes) as Biden does saying police TARGET black and brown people (as some police certainly have). They’re both lies. Trumps gets labeled a lie. Biden gets like added context, an ideological explanation, and 10hrs of obfuscating coverage from the media and declare vociferous it is not a lie.

The country is tired of these stupid games and no one gives a shit.

John McWhorter needs to give a full throated apology for rooting for trump’s assassination. We know see the fruits of the left and it’s trump derangement syndrome. I despise Trump but certainly will vote for him know. Jesus these lefties don’t realize how fractured our country is and now Trump nearly is killed by an assassin/.

I doubt that you, Glenn, will ever see this remark because it is much too late. But your "lovely wife LaJuan" has listened to you manfully claiming, in her hearing, that Trump was speaking "demagoguery" - please do define this - and so please justify this. You went along with the Left's insistence that Trump uttered " nothing but lies every time he opened his mouth" - so again, please identify those lies, in front of your "lovely wife" - who is beginning to sound like a totalitarian "newspeak" that you are required to placate every time you mention her. What is her dependence on you, and could you perhaps challenger HER, now and then ?

The very last thing I would ever imagine from Glenn Loury , a proudly and publicly independent thinker, is that he would dilute his incomparably incisive analysis of anything, for any reason. You are so much better than that.

Dems need a new candidate if they want to win. Doesn't have to be Harris. Senior Black Democrat James Clyburn suggested a mini-primary, a series of town hall meetings. Due to the "in good faith" clause, delegates can release themsleves. Could have a process in which 50 delegates nominate a candidate, qualifying them for the town halls. Rule would be only positive speech, not tearing down each other. In the current crisis, candidates will abide by this rule. All this will rivet the public, and generate excitement. This would reset the race. A fresh candidate will beat Trump!

Again. “Trump lied” “rapist over the border” where in the world do John and Glenn get their news? Have you no clue how many women children have been raped by illegals and murdered? One is too many. The Chicago mayor blamed Nixon for the 18 people shot this weekend and not a one Democrat said “gun violence,” or “mass shooting.” Glenn was shocked? They put this man on a bike for show where he forgot to put his foot down when he stopped and fell over. Biden was incoherent, senile and he lied. Examples of Trump’s lies please. Another sad discussion. So out of touch!

BTW the only party full of liars and wanna be dictators is the Lib party. They would do everything and cheat to keep control. Look no further than Bernie Sanders.

This ship has sailed for me. I can’t stand to listen to John anymore. He will be the reason my boys will be called to war or drafted and if his party had their way so will his girls. I can’t support the enemy.

John mentions that he can not believe we are at a place where someone who lies like Trump is normalized to the point that he is reached the pinnacle of this political process. Again his one sided perspective shines. The same can be said about Biden. Biden has lied his entire political career. And I am not talking about statements out of context and hyperbole. Straight up lies his entire career. In fact, his lies are the very reason that Biden’s first foray into presidential elections crashed decades ago. The media called him out for his lies about his academic career and other things and it was the end of his campaign. I don’t think election of Trump should be the locus point for the normalization of this type of behavior. Politicians have been lying since ancient history. There was a brief moment in this modern civilization era of the USA when such behavior would constitute a moral

Affront to all. However, the fact that Biden rose to the top of the Dem ticket in 2020 as arguably the most dishonest politician on the Democrat side… has no reflection on Trump or his supporters. Obama was a two faced opportunist, and his VP was a proven liar. If anything, the normalization of lies, exaggeration and dishonesty in politics can be pointed at that administration. It was normalized because I think it was during that administration that the mainstream media became a whore for the democrat party and stopped doing its job as an arm of the democratic process as an independent and objective arbiter of truth that it had established itself as being in the 20th century.

For what it's worth, @MarkSussman, I'm not digging these choppy edits. They cut into the natural ability of Glenn and John to speak off the cuff and undermine the authority of their statements. Personally, I'd rather have the awkward pauses, filler, and dead air.

Nice job. Yes, I saw some of that interview last week. Very insightful.

Always remember that not every human being thinks the same. So not every black person will ever think the same. I like John McWhorter, but he really has something against Trump.

Yes, I agree with you. As a current grad student, I understand very well about sources and making an argument. You can't just name call because you don't like someone or something. Give valid reasons.

I am a big fan of John's commentary when it comes to racial issues, but when it comes to Trump, I get turned off by his comments. As a child of the inner city, I witnessed the name calling from black kids in the schoolyard. John is imitating those same kids I could not relate to. They think they are making a scholarly point by insulting you with certain adjectives, and lies. But that is part of black culture. There is an irony there when it comes to John. He should know better.

Here's a question of language. When there's a reference to someone "speaking from the Teleprompter". Wouldn't it be more accurate to say "reading aloud from the Teleprompter". Normally, speaking implies a whole cognitive process of putting ones own thoughts and ideas together into coherent English. Reading is much less cognitively demanding and provides little or no insight into what the reader is thinking.

John's being is a living in a circle of many Michelle Goldbergs. Can we expect a person to exit a circle of his life? It's not about material things, it's about the whole person's existence..

[Time 17:00]; Regarding Kamala Harris as presidential. (1): There are occasions when I engage in serious discussion with directors, officials or even friends. I do not laugh during such discussion, because that would negate the seriousness. I have seen videos of Harris entering laughter mode (cackling) during serious discussion. That strikes me as dishonest and as seeking to derail the discussion.

(2): Harris vs. Biden debate as candidates for democrats’ presidential nominee, where Harris referenced Biden, anti-busing and herself. This would have been between June 2019- March 2020; during a time when DEI, allies and activists engaged in insincere race-baiting for sole purpose of manipulating outcomes and destroying careers. During that time, Jesse Smolliet failed to successfully execute a White Supremacy hate-crime hoax.

I recently began to watch the debate. A person with zero tv experience such as myself would be expected to look in the wrong direction rather than at the camera. But, not someone who has been in various political offices since 1974. Someone that comes to my home for dinner may say sarcastically “Trump told people to inject bleach in their arm”, (untrue) - but not a sitting president. I recently saw the parachute video of Biden at a G-7 type summit, where he wanders away from a ceremonial landing to chat with a maintenance worker. Jill runs over and fetches him to bring him back. Biden looked lost and confused.

Funny… I was going to mention that same thing… John claims he is a centrist… but the fact that he would rather have the presidency run by a shadow government radical progressives like it is now… than have Trump win… is telling. Trump won’t do the damage he fears… the Dems are destroying this country and its institutions. But as John had said on the view. He wants it all torn down.
