A Detroit News article from 2021 showed that of America's cities with at least 100,000 resident, only Memphis, at 2,418.24 violent crimes per 100,000 had a higher violent crime rate than Detroit (2,248.44):

Could you and John do an exploration of solving the problem of bad policing the old-fashioned, grand, American way: ALL police chiefs should be DIRECTLY ELECTED by the people they are supposed to serve! No more police departments controlled by a mayor! I guarantee policeman with the record of complaints that Derek Chauvin had would NOT be tolerated by any ELECTED police chief; a Chauvin could cost an elected chief his career. And an elected chief would lay down the law on shooting unarmed civilians: he would tell his officers: Do it once, and you’re OFF the force, at a minimum.
Needless to say, the other half of the problem is qualified immunity ( created by the COURTS, naturally !) of police. Getting rid of QI would give the police a strong incentive to not use deadly force, except when their own life was in gravest jeopardy.

And there was something both Professor Loury and Professor McWhorter said - if I remember correctly, I know the sentiment was expressed more than once - that bothered me then. But I didn't have time to comment then, so will avail myself of that opportunity now.
What was said was that nobody "on the left" would accept the conclusion that George Floyd was NOT murdered by Officer Chauvin, and that he and his fellow officers were unjustly convicted. I am firmly on the left, have been my entire adult life (Am the same age as Professor Loury), and I am perfectly willing to accept that finding, assuming it is corroborated by further examination. There is a high probability of that being so. Perhaps the officers could have done things a bit better, that is for professionals to decide. But it wasn't murder. And the maelstrom of destruction that came in its aftermath were shocking and unjustified.
I do regret George Floyd's death. As John Donne wrote, "No man is an island . . . Any man's death diminishes me. because I am involved in mankind." That sentiment is what brought me to my perch on the political spectrum. And it can be a lonely one, it's been stunning to me how many folks calling themselves "left" or "progressive" have lost their minds. The first thing I did after reading that comment was, on a hunch, pull up the Wiki entry for Demographics of Detroit. The drop in population was shocking. The cited articles about the drop in the raw number of murders bizarrely used the word "rate." Imprecise language and gaslighting is the way of the world these days.

My pleasure. Two of my uncles migrated to Detroit after WW II. I have fond memories of visiting them when Detroit was one of America's most vibrant cities. It's a shell of itself today, however.

Loury and McWhorter believe what they believe. I think they are sincere. What I reject is repeated attacks directed at the Black community and the Left without any mention of the threat to democracy that is created by Conservatives.

Christian Ziegler and his attorney have denied any wrongdoing on his part, but security footage obtained from the victim's apartment has shown that he was at the building on the date of the alleged assault. Admissions to law enforcement from his wife have also complicated the matter.
As revealed in recently released court documents, Bridget Ziegler was interviewed by investigators in early November, confirming that she, her husband, and the victim had been friends and had engaged in a consensual sexual encounter roughly a year prior to the assault that the victim now alleges.

Could you and John do an exploration of solving the problem of bad policing the old-fashioned, grand, American way: ALL police chiefs should be DIRECTLY ELECTED by the people they are supposed to serve! No more police departments controlled by a mayor! I guarantee policeman with the record of complaints that Derek Chauvin had would NOT be tolerated by any ELECTED police chief; a Chauvin could cost an elected chief his career. And an elected chief would lay down the law on shooting unarmed civilians: he would tell his officers: Do it once, and you’re OFF the force, at a minimum.
Needless to say, the other half of the problem is qualified immunity ( created by the COURTS, naturally !) of police. Getting rid of QI would give the police a strong incentive to not use deadly force, except when their own life was in gravest jeopardy.

As a paid subscriber, I was one of the first to experience this episode in its entirety. And there was something both Professor Loury and Professor McWhorter said - if I remember correctly, I know the sentiment was expressed more than once - that bothered me then. But I didn't have time to comment then, so will avail myself of that opportunity now.
What was said was that nobody "on the left" would accept the conclusion that George Floyd was NOT murdered by Officer Chauvin, and that he and his fellow officers were unjustly convicted. I am firmly on the left, have been my entire adult life (Am the same age as Professor Loury), and I am perfectly willing to accept that finding, assuming it is corroborated by further examination. There is a high probability of that being so. Perhaps the officers could have done things a bit better, that is for professionals to decide. But it wasn't murder. And the maelstrom of destruction that came in its aftermath were shocking and unjustified.
I do regret George Floyd's death. As John Donne wrote, "No man is an island . . . Any man's death diminishes me. because I am involved in mankind." That sentiment is what brought me to my perch on the political spectrum. And it can be a lonely one, it's been stunning to me how many folks calling themselves "left" or "progressive" have lost their minds. I really appreciate Professor Loury's willingness to engage with people from a wide range of political perspectives. I learn a lot, that's why I am here. Thanks, gentlemen.
