Wow. Glenn -- I sometimes get irritated with you over Gaza. Then you do something like this. You are going to get a lot of grief over this, and I salute you!
You listened, but pushed back several times: the poor physicists caught in the crossfire, the apparent contradiction in the free speech claims, and -- most importantly -- the danger of becoming "race blind" to the point of losing sight of remaining race-linked disparities.
Here in lines the problem, these wild swings back and forth leaves us with bad policy. Biden goes all in with DEI and Trump comes with his wrecking ball. When will sensible policies return.
[Time 26:00]; Wax reports that opinions external to DEI ideology are framed by Penn as causing psychological trauma to those who are oppressed. Therefore, non-DEI opinions are either ignored, silenced or punished. (Free speech violation). I see such censorship as abusive to students who are denied the opportunity to exercise their communication skills.
[Time 52:00]; Loury is concerned about the possibility of over-correction resulting from Trump’s federal ban on DEI; where morbidity/mortality issues, Black History Month, etc., become collateral damage or stigmatized as “DEI-ish”. I hope that such over-correction does not occur. Hopefully, what was in place prior to the 2018 DEI implementations - would be seen as the standard to return to.
I am glad that Amy Wax is fighting Penn’s double-standard. Recently, I reviewed some of my disciplinary emails and you would have thought that I were harming orphans in the front lobby of the health department. My crime was that I repeatedly pointed out that DEI information failed to meet public health standards for legitimacy.
Dear Prof. Loury. I have one quibble that I'd like address. You have publicly stated on either this podcast or other podcasts that Amy Wax is NOT in fact "your friend" and you have no personal connection with her whatsoever. Yet you insist on calling her "your friend" when you have her on the podcast despite your public disclaimer. Why?? Why not just be honest and say something along the lines that you believe in academic freedom, freedom of speech and the true calling of a university, henceforth you find her case compelling and important and because of this you WANT to "platform" her? (and you may even appreciate the intellectual engagement" nothing wrong with any of that, but ever since you've disclosed you are not friends of any sort.. hearing that coming out of your mouth (ex post disclosure) just grates on me.
I agree a lousy audio. The Dean of the Penn Law School and the Chancellor of the university should resign in disgrace. Amy Wax is expected to defend herself against what? A Bill of Indictment that is unlawful. Glenn regurgitated the false allegations. SHAME ON PENN UNIVERSITY.
The problem with Amy's position on antisemitic behavior on campus is saying things like globalize the Intifada in the shared space of a university campus can easily border on harassment. Let's be honest, they weren't protesting for peace. They were calling for additional violence. You only have to hear that one to know their position. Jewish students having to live with that every minute you're on campus creates what many would call an unacceptable dynamic.
It would be one thing if there was an announcement that between 12:00-1:00 on this day there will be protests. 24 hours a day in a shared environment where the wrath of one group is directed at another on campus is not going to work.

It's always a great pleasure to hear from Dr. Wax. Have her on more.

In essence, what are almost always delusions for most students, were reality for Jewish students. And it's not over, given Columbia in last few days.
