I tend to agree with commenter Robert Redd on this one. There's something very ironic about the Trump administration's pursuit against DEI, something which I support, and Trump's penchant for prioritizing personal loyalty above all else in appointing unconventionally qualified individuals to his cabinet. In a prior comment, I questioned whether or not Pete Hegseth was the least conventionally qualified Secretary of Defense in modern history, similar to how many argued that Claudine Gay was the least conventionally qualified Harvard president in modern history. It's certainly an open question, although I lack the knowledge the adjudicate the matter.
Thanks. If Conservatives are going to argue they oppose DEI because they want the best qualified, they have to appoint the best qualified. They present people like RFK Jr who promotes Vitamin A as a preventative for measles, a disease that was virtually eradicated by vaccine. We now have children showing up in hospitals with liver failure because their parents overdosed them with Vitamin A.
Conservatives are the ones lowering the standards.
All political positions are selected by the person you elect, good or bad.
Knowing that, can you honestly say that everyone under every admin has been qualified for the job? Example: Ambassadors are purely political positions used by both parties to reward donors/supporters.
No, you tried to deflect away from the basic point I was making, and the point Mr. Loury was making. And Harvard prez: still not a STEM job. Neither is SecDef. Or prez. Or lawyer. Or politician of any stripee.
None of them are STEM.
To clarify: doctors, nuclear engineers, structural engineers, mathematicians, hard science scientists.
Having been the recipient of third world medicine as a disabled US vet I can tell you that the last place you want equity vs equality is medicine. My personal experience was with the VA; not one of the doctors (in my time) were from the USA. Fortunately I was also covered by a private plan so I never went back. So. no to DEI in STEM.
If you want to advocate for 'qualifications' for political positions good luck with that. We'd never have had Obama.
ArtI.S3.C3.1 Overview of Senate Qualifications Clause
No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen.
ArtII.S1.C5.1 Qualifications for the Presidency
No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.
I am sorry that you had a bad experience. Public perception of VA hospitals may be poor, but VA hospitals tend to compare well with non-VA hospitals when outcomes are reviewed
In the most recent Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems star ratings, 79 percent of VA facilities received a summary star rating of four or five stars, compared to 40 percent of non-VA hospitals. And in CMS’s Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings, more than 58 percent of VA hospitals received 4 or 5-star ratings, compared to 40 percent of non-VA hospitals. This is only the second year VA hospitals were included in this review, and VA outperformed non-VA health care both times.
In 2023, the Journal of General Internal Medicine and the Journal of American College of Physicians both published articles reviewing nationally peer-reviewed studies comparing VA health care to that of other providers. The studies concluded that VA health care is as good as or better than non-VA health care in the areas of quality, safety, access, patient experience and comparisons of cost versus efficiency.
Of 26 studies that looked at non-surgical care, 15 reported VA care was better than non-VA care, and seven reported equal or mixed clinical quality outcomes. Of the 13 studies that looked at quality and safety in surgical care, 11 reported VA surgical care is comparable or better than non-VA care.
I think a feature on the corruption of the National Diversity Council and Dennis Kennedy would be appropriate at this time. According to the NDC’s most recently filed Form 990 IRS filing, Kennedy worked 2 hours per week during the year and received $344,000 as its Chairman, position that is usually uncompensated in a non-profit. The Daily Wire is reporting on a deep and wide corruption at this entity.
You are so eager to pathologize the Black community that you simply cannot address the gross incompetence of the Trump administration. This is truly sad.
Agree completely; if the powers that be desire equity in outcomes fine - just leave that practice to the non-professional non-STEM jobs.
Otherwise you create the exact outcome no one wanted - unqualified folks in critical jobs.

Hegseth?
Not a STEM job, so your point would be...?

I asked about Hegseth’s qualifications.
Was Claudine Gay qualified for her non STEM job?

You apparently misunderstood my point.
If Trump is unqualified due to limited to no government experience then go check out Os creds. Student, activist, short-term senator.

Really? You quote the Hill?
Well my friend, I have personal, direct experience myself and second hand from many of my former teammates.
The VA has always sucked, btw; ask a Vietnam veteran, or Korean war, or WWI/II....
